Executive Summary

Chemnitz University of Technology (TUC) is a campus university located in the Saxony region of Germany. TUC needed to build a new high-performance computing environment to support scientific research as well as research into supercomputing itself. The budget was strictly limited, and the solution had to be delivered within a very aggressive timescale. TUC engaged IBM to lead an implementation team including specialist storage vendors MEGWARE and Xiranet. The joint team deployed a diskless 538-node cluster of IBM System x3455 servers with twin dual-core AMD Opteron (Revision F) processors, linked using InfiniBand technologies. The cluster supports research into computing, physical science, thermodynamics, nano-technology and quantum chemistry.
