When CooperVision acquired Ocular Sciences, Inc. in 2004, the company became the world's third largest contact lens company. The acquisition dramatically increased the demands on CooperVision's IT infrastructure and staff. CooperVision has realized profound performance improvements, enabling the company to maintain its global data center model without incurring additional subsidiary site costs, by using the new 64-bit solution from Unisys, Microsoft and Intel. CooperVision deployed a scale-up solution using Unisys ES7000 servers with Intel Itanium 2-based processors, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition, and Microsoft SQL Server 2000. This allowed the company to remain a 100-percent Microsoft shop while providing enhanced processing support as well as backup and disaster recovery for its SSA iBaan Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) application.
