County Meath Vocational Education Committee (VEC) operates facilities that have distinct identities and programs that reflect the needs of local students. Because IT staff had no central tools to manage the desktop infrastructure, County Meath VEC incurred extra IT costs through redundant, time-consuming tasks. Security updates and software upgrades were administered manually, and it was impossible to see whether all computers were running up-to-date applications and antivirus software. The county standardized desktops on Windows 7 Enterprise and deployed Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3, thereby reducing annual power costs by 30,000 (U.S.$48,000), and hardware maintenance costs by 30 percent. Help-desk staff expedited issue resolution by 75 percent.
