Future Group Turns To Virtualization To Cut Power Consumption And Datacenter Real Estate Requirements

Headquartered in Mumbai, Future Group is India's largest retailer and employs 30,000 staff. Future Group wanted to reduce the server sprawl that led to Future Group running more than 100 physical servers in its datacenter by October 2008 and to meet business unit demands for more datacenter resources to support growing user numbers and new application and product development. They choose VMware to overcome these challenges. They implemented VMware vSphere and VMware ESXi running on Sun server hardware. The results of deploying VMware were the guest virtual machines are now running on 10 Sun Fire X4450 servers, leaving plenty of capacity within the Future Group datacenter to sustain future growth and Future Group has reduced its power consumption by up to 25kVA and cut the number of racks required to house its datacenter hardware by three. It has also improved average server CPU utilization from 10 percent to 40 percent.
