Executive Summary

Incorporated in 1977, HDFC Ltd. pioneered the home finance business in India in the 1970s, when demand for housing in India's urban areas was booming. The company's challenge was to build a flexible and scalable IT infrastructure that improves operational efficiency and reduces risk. From a business continuity perspective, HDFC required multisite Disaster Recovery (DR). This called for one DR site in Mumbai to protect against extended building outages and one DR site in another city to protect against earthquakes. The in-city DR was also important because it meant having data available closer to the users at each site. From a vendor selection perspective, the NetApp solution gave HDFC the flexibility to run Oracle on Windows using iSCSI, and later migrate to Oracle on UNIX using NFS.
