IDS Scheer had an unnecessarily complex server and storage infrastructure that resulted from addressing the growing requirements of its hosting services by adding servers and storage devices as needed. The company needed to simplify the infrastructure to lower ongoing costs and reduce demands on technical staff. To simplify its system architecture and systems management, IDS Scheer virtualized servers and storage, using VMware vSphere on IBM System x3850 M2 servers to reduce the physical server footprint from 131 to 9 servers, and introducing IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) to manage 30 IBM System Storage devices.
