Executive Summary

Whenever you make a purchase online, pay a bill or check your account balance, do you ever notice the "Padlock" icon at the bottom right-hand side of your browser? It signifies that the page is secure, and if you double click on it, you'll be able to view the site's identifying information, as well as its all-important Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate. A key component of any online security program is the ability to electronically transmit information via encryption. By extending Liberty's in-house PKI to Verizon's globally trusted OmniRoot Certification Authority, the University can issue externally facing certificates. A third party validating these certificates will discern that Liberty's certificates are signed by Verizon and are therefore trustworthy.
