Internet Initiative Japan (IIJ) was an established and successful provider of cloud-computing services - but tight economic times and a rapidly evolving market presented a challenge. To meet the new needs of new customers, IIJ needed a more powerful and flexible cloud-computing platform that would also reduce costs. It needed more effective, and more cost-effective, IT management. By adopting Microsoft Virtualization including Hyper-V, a feature of the Windows Server 2008 operating system, IIJ achieved that new cloud-computing service, called IIJ GIO. Management costs are lower. Time for provisioning public cloud services, a major management function, has decreased from five days to 10 minutes. Time-to-market and development costs were reduced by as much as half. And, IIJ sees the service contributing to increased competitiveness and higher revenues.
