Kane County's legacy, highly proprietary IT environment included mainframes, a token ring network and a monolithic storage system. With management and support costs increasing, the county needed a fundamentally different approach to support its end users. However, budget constraints necessitated a creative approach to meeting IT needs without dramatic cost increases. The county virtualized 100 physical servers using VMware on Dell PowerEdge servers with Intel Xeon processors and implemented Dell EqualLogic iSCSI SAN storage in two locations for a disaster recovery solution. The county also virtualized over 250 desktops for police and health departments to cut down the length of service calls to the county's numerous locations.
