KLM Equipment Services (KES) provides Ground Support Equipment (GSE) services from the Schiphol airport in Europe. The company manages and maintains a range of equipment including simple baggage dollies to massive main-deck-loaders. Using LANSA systems, the small team of the company was able to develop and maintain KES's system with the use of LANSA for iSeries to start with, and with Visual LANSA more recently. The key aim of the company is to focus on minimizing operational costs improving availability and use of equipment. Their main areas of service include maintenance, fleet management, leasing, trading of equipment, consultancy, spare parts, rental, along with refuelling and equipment air services. KES manages 15,000 vehicles that includes 3,000 motorized vehicles. Their maintenance and consultancy customers include airlines, airline handlers, KES's own lease division, Schiphol and other airports around the world. The LANSA system had a green-screen user interface and lacked Windows integration. This affected user productivity because of which KES decided to redevelop its systems. The company considered evaluation and trial of Java and other tools to finally choose Visual LANSA. The company was used to LANSA's intuitive 4GL and repository. The company found Java more complex and required low level coding. The company wanted to move to a Visual LANSA Windows environment and offer a more intuitive user interface. This included tree views, drag-and-drop, word wrapping and presenting more information in a single screen.
