Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has been at the forefront of national security since its founding in 1943. The organization now finds itself at the forefront of supercomputing technology. LANL's research projects routinely involve very large scientific simulations and data sets. Through a competitive procurement, LANL selected IBM to build a new high-performance system to handle the workload. Working with LANL scientists, IBM built a hybrid system that combined IBM PowerXCell 8i Cell Broadband Engine processors and AMD Opteron dual-core processors to achieve incredible speed in a small and efficient package. Dubbed "Roadrunner" by LANL after the state bird of New Mexico, the system smashed the petaflop barrier, putting the system in the #1 position on the June 2008 TOP500 list.
