AMEC plc. was created in 1988, when original parent companies William Press and Fairclough merged and eventually bought the Matthew Hall Group. The company's challenge was to reduce reliance on tape backup and improve utilization of two UK data centers; provide storage for Open Systems SnapVault (OSSV) backups from remote offices and remove tape from these. AMEC plc. chose NetApp FAS systems because they offered the product scalability and reliability needed. NetApp also provided crucial compatibility with VMware and Exchange, which was a key component of AMEC's plans to redesign its data centers and implement storage-level replication.
