NICS Uses Puppet to Streamline Security and Ensure Consistency Across Their Servers
Kraken, established by the National Institute of Computational Science (NICS) and funded by the National Science Foundation, is the first academic supercomputer to reach peta-scale performance (and eighth fastest overall). They wanted an organized system that was centralized, so they could be confident that their changes applied to all necessary servers, provide this level of reliability, and confidence that any recovery from outages could be handled quickly. They chose Puppet to overcome these challenges. By using Puppet, the concerns about consistency and dependability have been assuaged with the ease and speed at which settings can be restored. The results of deploying Puppet were reliable, consistent and secure servers that can be easily managed.
