Andrew Pollack, a well-known advocate and expert whose articles and speeches are highly regarded in the Lotus Notes community, spent more than 18 years offering primarily IBM solutions through his company, Northern Collaborative Technologies. A few years ago, when Pollack started work on Second Signal, a communications tool for volunteer firefighters, he needed a tool to develop applications for use in a non-Lotus environment. It became apparent that he had to look to a combination of Lotus and Microsoft solutions to build and distribute Second Signal. In particular, Pollack found Microsoft's Visual Studio to be a compelling front-end solution that meshed well with the back-end Domino platform, enabling him to successfully architect and distribute Second Signal.
