Executive Summary

Play.com is a leading online retailer in UK. This case study explores the company's storage demands and use of Pillar Axiom to tackle them. Play.com sells nearly five million items on its website. It also allows alien sellers to use the site as a selling base for a charge. With such a vast inventory, the company needed a storage system to support its rapid growth. Requests by customers also needed to be stored and processed while taking peaks and troughs into consideration. Added to these, the storage facility had to be flexible enough to leave the retailer's revenue supporting Oracle database environment undamaged. The company sought a partner who could react directly to technical specifications and business requirements of their storage capacity. The paper shows how Pillar designed a test plan to test compatibility of the company's business requirements with the Pillar Axiom system. Axiom's solution has provided an easily manageable and flexible platform with multi-tiered storage of data which can be scaled to a capacity of hundreds of terabytes. Both SAN and NAS have been provided for the same storage pool. The paper concludes that Pillar's solution has left Play.com feeling confident of its storage and oracle databases. Axiom's commendable job led Play.com to purchase its disaster recovery system.
