Executive Summary

The Qatar Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs was looking for a cost-effective and scalable enterprise messaging tool as Novell system was becoming increasingly expensive. The Qatar Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs is responsible for human resources development and training, industrial relations, occupational health and safety, social welfare, and rehabilitation thus needed modern technology to meet exacting performance indicators. Microsoft started working with the ministry in 2003 with the added advantage of the government Microsoft Enterprise Agreement for low-cost volume licensing and a Premier Support remote support package and suggested to run Microsoft collaboration and communication technology parallel with Novell for a year. The success of this pilot program that abolished all doubts about making a significant alteration in vendor resulted in the deployment of Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 for the mailboxes. The new features in Exchange Server 2007 proved to be a great success, especially continuous cluster replication, which makes a passive copy of the mailbox server that will operate automatically if the active mailbox node fails. Finally in year 2007 the Novell servers were switched off permanently and all the users joined Active Directory service. The business value of Active Directory is its built-in integration not just to Microsoft technology, but also in the way that independent software vendor and third-party software integrates.
