The freight railroad industry plays a major role in the quality of life, they outsourced the mainframe operations to a hosting provider, but the TCO proved to be higher than anticipated. They had also initiated a reduction in expenses by moving off the mainframe to open systems. They called the Mainline Information Systems to assess the current infrastructure. The Mainline team demonstrated that they could avoid the onerous migration costs associated with moving off the mainframe, and implement an efficient and cost-effective solution by owning the mainframe, leveraging the Linux operating system, utilizing sub-capacity pricing and financing through Mainline Financial Services. They also eliminated unnecessary costs associated with software and significantly lower TCO than the proposed Unix migration.
