Reengineering of Project-Specific Procurement Process at India's Premier Defense Shipbuilding Organization
The case study discuses an interesting case study where a famous shipping yard in India made use of the services of Mahindra Satyam to learn about the correct method for SAP (Systems Applications and Products) implementation. SAP is credited to be one of the best business software vendors in the world. Although the shipping yard already had SAP, they did not how to make optimum use of it. The shipping yard was mainly constructed to fulfill the requirements of the Indian Navy and to come up with sophisticated sea worthy ships. They aimed to re-engineer their whole business process with SAP implementation. Thus, the yard requested Mahindra Satyam to make use of any department within the organization and re-engineer it. The department that Mahindra chose was Projectspecific Procurement Process since it contained a lot of departments and was in good shape for re-engineering. The various departments in the Project Procurement Process had to monitor customer demands, decide on the type and source of raw materials needed to build a product and calculate the time needed for it. Once that is done, the tenders are called for any company that can give a quality product for the lowest bidding price. Mahindra Satyam faced enough problems initially to come with a feasible solution because of lack of data, but they finally sought a solution by recommending standardized format for accepting and evaluating bids without even implementing SAP.
