The U.S. Census Bureau contracted with IDEAL to develop a system to digitally archive thousands of paper maps and other documentation in order to eliminate paper. The system needed to support image retrieval and display via a standard PC; images needed to be available to the staff in Jeffersonville, Indiana; Suitland, Maryland; and the other Census Bureau Regional Offices, located in twelve different states. The system needed to support printing/plotting to multiple devices in multiple locations. Additionally, the digital images needed to be used as tools in updating the features and boundaries contained in the U.S. Census Bureau computerized mapping database. IDEAL implemented an automatic scanning and indexing system using IDEAL/Contex 8010 color scanners and IDEAL's automatic indexing solution.
