The University Health Network (UHN) is an umbrella organization encompassing three major hospitals in Toronto, Canada, and a group of medical laboratories and foundations. University Health Network currently stores over 100TB (230TB raw) of medical images in its Picture Archiving And Communication System (PACS). By using PACS technology, UHN has been able to eliminate the need to store hard copies of all medical images. By storing patient data as digital images, PACS expands on the possibilities of conventional hard-copy and film-based systems by providing the capabilities of off-site viewing and reporting. UHN's Medical Imaging Informatics management team then made the decision to move all PACS imaging data to a NetApp FAS960 for primary storage and started using a NearStore R200 for secondary storage.
