Executive Summary

Florida International University (FIU) is a public, multicampus research university in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The university's Division of Information Technology had a terminal services environment that supported part of the faculty and staff. It planned to build a second infrastructure to accommodate more than 39,000 students, but it was challenged by application compatibility and multi-user environment issues that would make it prohibitive to manage applications on such a large scale. FIU resolved these problems by deploying Microsoft Application Virtualization for Terminal Services. The university reduced application update time from one day to one hour, controlled the applications that users access without time-consuming scripting, simplified software upgrades, and deployed computer-intensive applications that previously could not run in the terminal services environment.
