Gmina Przesmyki is a Polish municipality consisting of 23 villages in the East of Poland within a 9 km radius. A rural region relying primarily on agriculture, only 60% of households have fixed telephone lines running on a very old copper infrastructure with a minimal ADSL service, no fiber network, and no business case to encourage operator infrastructure investment for data access. The challenge was to provide cost-effective broadband services to 23 remote villages in rural eastern Poland. Gmina Przesmyki created a WiMAX-based broadband network.
