Computer viruses have come a long way since the first floppy boot sector viruses appeared in the mid-1980s. As programming techniques advanced and the Internet became a dominant part of the business lives, hackers and virus writers exploited these new technologies to create increasingly complex and harmful attacks. Evolutionary "Jumps" in virus attacks take place every 12-18 months. Future threats will inevitably combine hackers' improved web programming capabilities with emerging technologies, such as WIFI, Bluetooth, 3G mobile technologies and VoIP, to create new types of complex, next generation attacks.
