A Distributed and Autonomous Beacon Scheduling Algorithm for IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee Networks

Executive Summary

Even though IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee is considered a promising technology for low - cost low - power Wireless Sensor Networking (WSNs), the current standardization still shows some room for improvement. Even though it seems to be an established opinion that power efficiency is coincided with synchronous networking to allow for precise and effective sleep scheduling, generic ZigBee is incapable to the beacon oriented MAC mode in meshed topologies. As WSNs in the general case are deployed in a way which shows overlapping transmission ranges of individual nodes and therefore inherits the capability of meshing and multi - hop transmissions, an enhancement to support beacons in a meshed multi - hop ZigBee network could turn out beneficial.
