While it can be agreed that the era of multimedia on PCs began about 20 years ago with the addition of sound cards and CD-ROMs, it quickly became clear that support for the real-time delivery of digital media would be a core requirement for the LAN. After all, every other form of information is (and has been for some time) delivered via a network today and static media, including optical discs, are fading in importance as many new subscriber units lacking these peripherals, including handsets and tablets, gain acceptance and even favor in corporate environments.
