The 802.11e standard opens the configuration of several MAC parameters, which makes WLANs vulnerable to users that selfishly configure these parameters to gain more throughput. In this paper, the authors propose a novel algorithm based on game theory to thwart this selfish behavior. The key idea of the algorithm is to react, upon detecting a selfish station, by using a more aggressive configuration that penalizes this station. The proposed algorithm adjusts the reaction against selfish stations building on foundations from multivariable control theory that guarantee a good tradeoff between stability and speed of reaction. By conducting a game theoretic analysis of the algorithm based on repeated games, they show its effectiveness against (one or multiple) selfish stations.
