Trust establishment is a key aspect of network management. Establishing trust in a wireless ad hoc network environment is a challenge because of its unique characteristics. These include the lack of a central authority and the autonomous, dynamic nature of these networks which result in poor connectivity and routing failure. Security may be provided through conduct analysis and certificate based techniques, such as digital certificates. The authors propose a hybrid trust model for mobile ad hoc networks, combining certificate and conduct based trust to provide secure communication. The security scheme occurs in an on-demand, fully distributive, wireless ad hoc network environment, establishing trust on the routing layer exclusively.
