Executive Summary

Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) wireless systems, employing multiple transmit and receive antennas, promise significant improvement in the capacity compared to conventional Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) systems. It was shown that the capacity of MIMO wireless systems increases linearly with the minimum of the number of antennas at the transmitter and receiver in rich scattering environments,. The increase in data rate can be achieved through Spatial Multiplexing (SM) as shown by Bell labs LAyered Space Time (BLAST) scheme.
