Enterprises are engaged in a wide range of efforts to integrate their data and make it available to a new class of applications, resulting in a heightened demand for constantly available data and a platform for managing that data that is scalable and continuously available. They have shown a willingness to investigate a range of new technologies, even moving outside the relational sphere, to accomplish these objectives. Moving forward, as structured enterprise data is increasingly being integrated with other forms, such as various content formats and nonrelational data structures, relational databases are proving inadequate for some of the workloads involved. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Web-based applications demand high throughput and reliability as well as support for complex data structures.
