Executive Summary

In this paper, the authors study the problem of data detection in Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems that use Spatial Multiplexing (SM) to achieve increased data rates. Modern communication systems employ forward error correction schemes like Turbo or LDPC codes that can operate close to capacity, but whose decoders need soft input, typically in the form of L-values. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that iterative receivers which exchange soft information between the detector and the channel decoder can achieve significantly better performance than their non-iterative counterparts. For these two reasons, they are interested in Soft-Input Soft-Output (SISO) data detectors.
