As mobile employees' personal devices increasingly become their preferred information platform, it's only natural for them to want to use those same devices to access enterprise resources. That, of course, poses a serious IT BYOD challenge: How best to satisfy those users while keeping information secure and protecting the network from rogue apps? The most common solution has been to extend mobile access with VPNs and Mobile Device Management (MDM), which runs completely counter to the notion of a "Personal device." The authors all know how complex that is to administer, how unpopular it is with users, and how often it means the enterprise must foot the entire bill for the devices and their service plans.
