Transferring and sharing of information between a control system and an information system or another control system requires a physical connection between networks. However, systems of critical importance generally are operated in a closed network environment, most often due to the impossibility of ascertaining the security of outside systems. This forces them to share information using diskettes or other external storage media. More recently, however, as control systems are being increasingly monitored and remote-controlled through information systems, and there is a growing need for sharing of control information in real time, through the internet or other public networks, active research has been under way to design security schemes allowing exchange of data from and to control systems.
