Executive Summary

Network coding was introduced in as a means to improve the rate of transmission in networks. Linear network coding was introduced in and it was found to be sufficient to achieve the maxflow-mincut capacity in certain scenarios such as multicast. The existence problem of network coding for networks without delay was converted into an algebraic problem. The case of acyclic networks with delays was abstracted as acyclic networks where each link in the network has an integer delay associated with it.
