Executive Summary

The hidden terminal problem is closely related to the Transmission Range (TX Range), Carrier Sensing Range (CS Range) and InterFerence Range (IF Range) of stations in wireless local area networks (WLAN). The TX Range is the range (With respect to the transmitting station) within which a transmitted frame can be successfully received. In IEEE 802.11 wireless networks, there are a number of available data rates, and for example, in 802.11g, eight data rates ranging from 6Mpbs to 54Mbps are defined. The transmission ranges of different data rates are quite different, due to their different SNR requirements at the physical layer. The CS Range is the range (With respect to the transmitting station) within which the other stations detect a transmission.
