The process of creating 3D animation and visual effects (VFX) for film and video has been steadily improving over time, best measured with the 15 minutes of animation in Walt Disney's feature Tron that debuted in 1982. Since Tron, and especially within the last several years, the complexity of modern entertainment imagery has improved by orders of magnitude by virtually every measure, but business demands require that projects still be delivered in tight timeframes and within budget. Unfortunately, the mechanics and complexity of the computer infrastructure necessary to support animation, VFX, and rendering has grown to a large extent.
