This paper has contributed to a lively discussion about how such acceleration might best be accomplished and, in particular, about the role that public policy in general and the federal government in particular might play in supporting innovation. This paper contributes to this discussion through an exploration of the histories of innovation in four particularly innovative sectors of the US economy: agriculture, chemicals, life sciences, and information technology. In this paper, they have compiled the collective experiences of some of the world's leading specialists in the economics of technological change, all of whom set out to explore the roots of accelerated innovation in their sector.
