A matrix organization relies upon a mix of both vertical and horizontal leadership. Vertical leaders manage the delivery of services that allow the entity to earn revenue. They also define the integrated enterprise's "Way of doing things." Matrix vertical leadership can go a long way towards harmonizing strategy, systems and structure. Horizontal leadership assignments are one way in which the integrated enterprise can tap effectively into the value brought by talent that was part and parcel of the acquired company and also cultivate new and stronger talent for the future.
