The growing deployment of smart meters to continuously measure power usage by consumers as part of a smarter power grid is resulting in the need for utilities to process and analyze thousands of data streams in near real-time to detect system overload. The authors describe the use of Cloud platforms to perform scalable, latency sensitive stream processing. One unique aspect of their work is the use of an adaptive rate control mechanism to restrict the stream rate to meet accuracy requirements for smart grid applications while consuming less bandwidth and computational overhead within the Cloud for stream processing.
