All-Optical Intra-PON Data Routing Between ONUs With a MG-Y Tunable Laser as 2.5 Gbps Burst-Mode Transmitter
Direct communication between ONUs is experimentally demonstrated with a tunable MG-Y laser in a ring+tree PON for 640 users, without passing electrically powered equipment. Access networks are a promising commercial segment for tunable laser diodes due to the need for colorless and cost-efficient customer premises equipment. The desired high user densities of these networks lead mostly to hybrid WDM/TDM configurations such as in, where a WDM ring collects the traffic of local TDM trees networks. The Modulated Grating Y-structure (MG-Y) laser is a multi-electrode tunable device that offers accurate wavelength tunability at switching speeds below 13 ns.
