This paper analyses Slovak business environment and opportunities using the concepts of National Competitive Advantage and Core Competence. These are two fundamental concepts in the literature on competitive strategy. The analysis provides not only ideas for consideration by policy makers and managers in Slovakia but also highlights opportunities for Lithuanian businesses in Slovakia. The opening up of the economies of former East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Rumania, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, and their move (in varying degrees) towards a more market-oriented system has provided a new area of discussion and concern.
