An Efficient and Reliable MAC Layer Broadcast Protocol for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks
Numerous safety applications in Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks (VANETs) primarily depend on a broadcast. Designing an efficient and reliable Medium Access Control layer broadcast protocol that satisfies the requirements of VANET applications is very important. The present paper thereby proposes a novel Location-based Efficient Multi-hop Broadcast protocol (LEMB) by enhancing the Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) mechanism of IEEE 802.11DCF for straight-road and cross-road scenarios. LEMB differentiates the distributed inter-frame space of the CSMA/CA mechanism based on inter-vehicle spacing to allow the farthest node within the one-hop transmission range to rebroadcast packets, thus reducing the number of broadcast hops.
