Executive Summary

Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks (VANETs) are a special class of Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) with their own unique characteristics. The VANETs has a different component from the MANETs: a fixed node called a RoadSide Unit (RSU). An RSU is always connected to the Internet through a wired high speed connection. In this paper, the authors propose a mutual authentication and key agreement scheme for V2I communications. Their scheme improves security and privacy protection compared with the existing protocols. They consider common driver's tendency to design a more efficient scheme. The results of the security and performance analysis show that their scheme is suitable for practical use in terms of security, privacy, and performance.
