In the paper, an opportunistic cooperation scheme is proposed to make an efficient use of the cooperative relay, where whether the cooperative transmission will be adopted depends on the channel quality from the source to the relay, as opposed to the deterministic cooperation regardless of the relay channel conditions. Closed-form expressions of the Bit Error Rate (BER) and the outage probability are derived over Rayleigh fading channels to evaluate the performance of the proposed cooperative diversity scheme. For the purpose of comparison, the performance of the coded cooperation is also analyzed, with numerical results justifying the merits of the opportunistic cooperation scheme.
