The market for Wi-Fi access is growing quickly but is also highly fragmented. Many companies have announced strategies for providing Wi-Fi access, and thousands of individuals and small businesses are creating their own hotspots. There are dizzying arrays of companies that are in the business of providing some sort of Wi-Fi access point. The Wi-Fi hotspot value chain includes everything from billing and support services, back-haul networks and VPN operators. This paper will provide an overview of this space from the perspective of a Wi-Fi hotspot consumer.
