Executive Summary

Much like most public and private organizations, thick clients (traditional PCs) have been a mainstay in the U.S. Air Force's computing environments since the early 1990s. Unfortunately, the inherent advantages of having the processing, applications and data storage at the desktop has come at great expense in terms of administrative workload cost of ownership, security, and even environmental impact. As a result of advances in alternative computing architectures, particularly with thin clients, contemporary research suggests that it might be time for a paradigm shift.
