This paper is a brief overview of high availability mechanisms built into the Oracle database server and its clients (i.e., drivers, adapters) to support application failover, during planned as well as unplanned database outages. The primary goal of this paper is to clarify Oracle's HA features FAN, FCF and TAF and make recommendations on when to use which. In a follow-up paper, the author will discuss in greater details how to use these mechanisms.
