In recent years, research has shown that network coding can dramatically improve network capacity and reliability for certain types of wireless networks. The authors investigate whether this performance gain through network coding carries over to the military tactical data network with its unique military requirements. In their study, they design network coding transmission algorithms that are tailored to tactical data network requirements, and compare the performance of several algorithms in user mission environments. They use discrete event simulation to evaluate the performance gains of these algorithms, based on metrics that are suitable for the military users.
