The drive to reduce carbon emissions and the move to less controllable energy sources has forced governments, energy producers, utilities and consumers to make the management of energy consumption a high priority. Appliances are a significant and uncontrolled contributor to consumption and the way in which they consume is not sustainable. Existing solutions focus mainly on two approaches; appliance efficiency and user behaviour change, while appliances can continue to squander energy unjustified. For optimal consumption appliances need to collaborate with users, the grid and their operating environment.
