If you are truly concerned about your employee's attitude, performance or devotion to the job, work with human resources to address the concerns gently and respectfully. Empty or pre-emptive threats do more harm than good, creating resentment, tension and a negative atmosphere in the facility. If you do need to threaten a demotion or termination, work with human resources to do this discreetly, making it clear exactly what changes are expected and what consequences will result if these changes do not occur in a specific length of time.
