Business Case for Core IP Network Virtualization

Executive Summary

Service provider networks are in the process of undergoing a massive network transformation from legacy circuit and packet networks to converged IP/MPLS networks. This paper presents the business case for extending network convergence across all business units including residential, business, mobile wireless and wholesale onto a single IP core network infrastructure while maintaining the autonomy of each business unit through virtualization. Core IP network virtualization enables convergence of separate IP core networks used by business units onto a single physical IP core network. The converged IP core network delivers greater economy of scale which reduces the unit costs of network capital and operations expense as compared to constructing separate core IP networks for each business unit.
